San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith Mike Nolan

In the first half of the San Francisco 49ers Sunday loss to the Arizona Cardinals, rookie quarterback Alex Smith showed a great deal of promise for the future. However, in the second half Smith showed his inexperience making rookie mistakes that proved to be costly. If the game was only two quarters long Alex Smith would have been nearly perfect. Smith played a flawless half of football, leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 7-3 lead at halftime. In the first half Smith completed 11/12 passes for 138 yards and had a passer rating of 114.6. He made numerous great decisions while running for his life behind a less than stellar offensive line. His first half performance was as good as anyone could ask for. Smith was poised, strong, and decisive. 49ers veteran wide receiver Johnnie Morton said, 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey White jersey
"He made a big step today. He's going to be a great quarterback." This remains to be seen, but Smith definitely showed that he could be with his performance in the first half of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. It's unfortunate for the young quarterback that he played so poorly in the second half because it overshadowed an otherwise solid performance. His second half stats were atrocious and cloud the progress that Smith made. In the second half he was 5/12 for 47 yards and 3 interceptions. Smith's quarterback rating finished a paltry 50.2. Despite this Smith still showed flashes that he can be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. Head coach Mike Nolan praised Smith's performance and the two will look at the film to try and figure out what went wrong in the second half. The Cardinals defense adjusted well to what the San Francisco 49ers were doing on offense and frequently had Smith running for his life in the second half. Sunday's game was another learning experience for the young quarterback; however, he will be able to take positives from it also.
